Coaching for change
Hamilton High School football players, dressed in suits and ties, bowed their heads in silence for more than 60 seconds in the middle of the Fairfax football field as they honored someone no one knew. Christian Garcia A 16-year-old junior football player from Southeast, he was injured during a JV game against MACES on Aug. 23 and passed away last week.
“The reason we do it is because we’re a family,” coach Elijah Asante told his players in the locker room after the game. “We love to compete, we want to win, but when a kid from the other school falls, we should feel that too, and that’s what you’re showing respect for. We have to always show class.”
When a coach is making a difference, despite his obsession with winning, it doesn’t always show on the scoreboard.
Assanti is doing just that at Hamilton, teaching players everything from how to tie a tie to how to tackle.
