After the big multiplayer battle arena boom passed its height about a decade ago, the avalanche of new entries into the genre slowed a bit, leaving heavy batters like League of Legends and Dota 2 as the only real option. However, there are still studios experimenting with design possibilities unique to this genre, and the result was the projects of Deadlock, Supervive and The The. fellowship. The latter of these games now announce early access launch dates, and are quickly announced despite a short delay from the creator’s original schedule.
The Fellowship attracted attention for its unique spins in the MOBA genre. This is very transformative, with Chief Rebel, the studio behind it, naming the project a multiplayer online dungeon adventure, or “Moda.” The genre name comes from the way that Fellowships use the synergy and tactical designs of familiar multiplayer teams as the basis for Diablo-style dungeon running games.
There are competitive leaderboards that track individual skills, but fellowships emphasize teamwork more than anything else. Assemble a group of four players, choose from a list of characters classified into tanks, healers and DPS classes, and set out into a highly difficult dungeon. Dungeons are categorized into faster “quick play” options or more complex “ranked” versions, so there’s loot and battles to earn money.
The Fellowship will begin early access on Steam on Thursday, October 16th. It will also host an open beta about steam, which will be held from Thursday, September 18th to Monday, September 23rd. You can add fellowships to your wish list here.
