I only have two large tattoos, and only one of them is based on a video game. Hitoshi Sakai’s mask is permanently fixed on my skin, with a red arrow floating above it. This is one of the best action games of all time, and we wanted to pay homage to that. Even at list price, ghost of tsushima It’s well worth the purchase, and now that it’s at an all-time low, it’s the perfect time to add it to your collection.
Ghost of Tsushima effortlessly blends a powerful personal story with incredible combat that even the best samurai games can’t match. In addition to the perfect balance of story and action, it has a gorgeous open world that allows you to immerse yourself in a vibrant but flawed island.
You play as Jin Sakai, an up-and-coming samurai under his adoptive father’s clan, but when the Mongols invade Tsushima and leave Jin for dead, you must dishonor your own code, rebel against Lord Shimura, and sneak through enemy camps as the Ghost of Tsushima, assassinating his enemies.
This is one of the best storylines I’ve ever seen in a game. Because even though the war with Khotun Khan and his army is dramatic and urgent, the main story is still the conflict between Hitoshi Sakai and Lord Shimura. Seeing both of these weigh heavily on the protagonist makes for a fascinating story, and watching Jin slowly become a symbol for the people remains fascinating throughout its 30-hour running time.
However, developer Sucker Punch nails Jin’s combat, effortlessly showing off his sword skills and the various “ghost” tools you can acquire throughout the game. When dealing with different enemies equipped with different equipment and armor, you need to quickly change your posture to better deal with them. This means you’ll be switching on the fly when dealing with large numbers of enemies.
Ghost of Tsushima combines atmosphere, writing, and gameplay into one incredible masterpiece. I can’t say it’s perfect. It suffers from some of the same problems that even the best open-world games run into, and the checklist-style side content, while exciting, isn’t as engaging as the main story. It doesn’t help that the story is so well executed. All the side stories pale in comparison.
PS5 players can currently afford to play the sequel, Ghost of Yorei, but there’s no sign of it on the upcoming PC games list just yet. But don’t miss out on Ghost of Tsushima. You can purchase this game and its expansion, Iki Island, for just $35.99 at Fanatical.
