Among all the great games released this year, healthy person Probably one of my favorites. Inspired by tabletop Dungeons and Dragons, the game doesn’t have the scope of Baldur’s Gate 3, but it has a unique brand of exuberance and chaos that stands out from the flood of DnD games that came after BG3. Playing on your mobile device synced to your PC or console gives you the calming atmosphere of a cozy gaming night, coupled with narration from Overwatch and Apex Legends’ Anjali Bhimani. It feels a little looser than Amelia Tyler’s excellent performance as the narrator. Overall, this is a fun and accessible fantasy experience, perfect for those who aren’t looking for a complex BG3-style adventure and don’t want to sit down and fight with friends to play it in person. And guess what? The latest update has made it even better.
For those of you who haven’t played Thunderfolk, it’s effectively a turn-based RPG for four players where you get together, choose a character, and begin your adventure to save Ardyn. You can control your heroes using your mobile phone and use different adventurer archetypes to create your perfect group of misfits.
While the campaign itself is a lot of fun, Thunderfolk’s 1.5 update adds an all-new One Shot mode that lets you choose a specific story mission and compete against others to show off your high score. Play solo or with friends, you can swap characters on the fly and earn points, and enemies defeated, gold earned, lives spent, and objective bonuses all contribute to your final score.
There are also some systemic changes, such as bars closing their doors (effectively eliminating foodies) and equipment being pre-arranged. You will be presented with a number of recommended items before each mission, and you can change them between adventures. Recommended sets vary depending on the quest. Early missions will give you low-level equipment, and difficult missions will give you more powerful equipment.
There are also four new missions specific to One Shot mode: Proving Grounds, Snack Run, Slip and Slime, and I Requested This. Each has its own level of difficulty. You Asked for This was designed in collaboration with the game’s Discord community and features everything from Mimics to Revenants. Developer Secret Door says it “must be played to be believed,” and you know what, I believe it.

Patch 1.5 will also bring additional quality of life updates, allow you to change the colors you see during combat, and also squash some bugs (hopefully not the beetles, though. I love them).
Thunderfolk patch 1.5 has been released and you can try the game for free on Steam. Only one person has access, so you can share the cost if you decide to pick it up. You can download Thunderfolk from here.
