Take a look at our list of the best roguelikes, and you’ll quickly be surprised at just how many forms the randomized run formula can take. From the poker-themed Ballatro to the mysteries of the Blue Prince’s mansion to the bullet-heaven mayhem of Vampire Survivors. There is an amazing range. A closer match to the third example is brotatois a punchy, chaotic top-down auto-shooter that’s one of the top-rated roguelikes on Steam. As part of our latest giveaway, we’re giving away a ton of codes for both the base game and its Abyssal Terrors DLC, so keep reading if you have a chance to add it to your library.
The premise of Brotato sounds like it was created by one of those scenario games, where each person contributes ideas without knowing what the person before them said. You’re a sentient potato…you can hold up to six incredibly deadly weapons at once…you’re fighting aliens. Well done guys, let’s ship! Similar to Vampire Survivor, attacks are automatic, but you’ll need to strategically build your loadout and expertly navigate each map to complete your run.
Speaking of aliens, there are a lot of different enemy units with different behaviors and attacks. The Abyssal Terrors DLC includes a few more elements, all with an aquatic theme. A disturbed aquatic theme. These units are based on some of the sea’s most terrifying or grotesque creatures, including anglerfish, goblin sharks, and giant squid.
There are also 16 new weapons, all inspired by the deep blue sea. From failures to tridents and harpoon guns. Combat options are now more diverse. New characters have also been added that are basically variations on the titular “tato” personality, including Buccaneer, Romantic, and Gangster.
With a user score of 96% on Steam, there are few roguelikes that match or beat Brotato on this metric. The first run may feel like a short experience, but it’s packed with replayability. Once unlocked, you can easily spend dozens of hours trying out encounters at higher difficulties and with different characters. DLC has also been introduced, so there’s a lot to get excited about.
Now that Abyssal Terrors is out, we’ve teamed up with developer Blobfish to give away the base game and DLC codes to 10 lucky winners. Just complete and enter the tasks on the widget below. Entries for this giveaway close on Friday, November 7th at 5am PT / 8am ET / 1pm GMT.
