I always want to dive when winter approaches. frostpunk 2. The fact that the world is covered in permanent frost is both frightening and fascinating, and what’s more, it helps us feel warmer in the comfort of our homes. With the game’s first DLC, Fractured Uptopias, just around the corner, there’s never been a better time to pick up the sequel to one of the best city-building games of all time.
Frostpunk 2 expands on the cruel world it was first introduced to. Set 30 years after an apocalyptic blizzard hit Earth, players take charge of New London, one of the surviving settlements, and the fate of Earth’s remaining inhabitants is in your hands. Of course there’s no pressure.
Many of the systems from the first game return in complete form, but you don’t have to have played the original. The sequel helps you understand how it works, but also introduces new mechanics that can be appeased (or avoided), such as a citizens’ council made up of different factions. You can be at the mercy of the decisions of others or become a pseudo-tyrannical leader, but your goal is to survive, thrive, and expand beyond the ever-encroaching walls of New London.
This adds a level of political intrigue to the city-building game, adding a new level of strategy not present in the original. All of this adds to an amazing, but sometimes stressful, experience. This is what Reed McCarter called “a more comprehensive and even tougher follow-up to the original concept” in his review of Frostpunk 2.
Fractured Utopias will be released next month, bringing distinct new challenges and more variety to the game’s open-ended Utopia Builder mode. If you want to really think about becoming the leader of New London (before you get into the expansion, of course), you can pick up Frostpunk 2 for just $23.39 / £19.75 at Fanatical. This is the lowest price ever for this game, with a 48% discount, so there’s never been a better time to buy.
