Although it’s not a Christmas movie, I love watching Indiana Jones movies this time of year because they’re so quirky and full of adventure and mystery. One of the best action-adventure games I’ve played this year, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle shows a lot of love and passion for the iconic archaeologist. With a trusty whip, a memorable hat, and a globe-trotting mystery to solve, MachineGames’ take on these charismatic personalities balances immersion with just the right amount of action.
Here, Troy Baker does a great job as the voice of Indiana Jones, and the story unfolds as Indiana Jones returns to Marshall College after breaking up with his fiancée, Marion. It seems like a simple professor role, but it quickly leads to a familiar indie-style mystery in which a giant steals a priceless treasure and sends it to the Vatican. Eventually, you will once again come face to face with the Nazis, the fascists despised throughout the world. This time, they are led by a mysterious and despicable man named Emmerich Voss.
This game captures the core of the movie well, while also offering great gameplay that will make you feel like you’re truly Indiana Jones. This handy whip comes in handy in a variety of situations, from completing puzzles to fighting Nazis. You can also deal with targets stealthily or, if you’re confident, launch an attack all at once. True, the latter is not recommended, but it is recommended.
In his review of Indiana Jones: The Great Circle, Paul Kelly gave the game an impressive 9/10, calling it “a wonder for fans of the series and newcomers alike, combining brain-teasing puzzles with mindless action in a way that only Indy can do,” and went on to say that it is the new gold standard for movie-inspired video games. Very high praise and I have to say I completely agree.
