Google has finally answered the cries of users, allowing Gmail users to exchange their embarrassing teenage email addresses.
Gmail account owners can now change their existing @ address while retaining their data and services.
Once changed, the old email address will remain active and the user will continue to receive emails sent to both the old and new addresses.
Stored data connected to your old address, such as photos, messages, and emails, will not be affected.
The ability to change your Google Account email address is being rolled out to all users in stages and will not be available to everyone right away, Google said in its .
Gmail users looking to switch to a more anonymous email address or feeling burdened by the email address they chose as a child celebrated the update on social media.
“Feature needed: 2005. Feature arrived: 2025. Gap: 20 years of suffering,” one user posted on X.
Another X user posted, “It means you can erase years of ‘cool’ usernames and nasty emails…unfortunately, you can’t erase the memories associated with them.”

Members of the transgender community and those who have changed their names were also happy that the new option would allow them to distance themselves from their old names.
Competing services such as Microsoft Outlook have made it easy for users to change their primary address by adding an “alias.”
Google only allows changes to accounts that end in @, and the new address must also end in @.
Users can reuse their old Google Account email address at any time, but once they change it, they can’t add another email address to the same account for the next 12 months.
Users interested in changing their email in the new system should ensure that it is deployed to their accounts.
Users can click (Manage Google Account) in their Gmail account. Under (Personal Information), click the email address of your Gmail account. If this option is available in your region, you can click the (Change your Google Account email address) option to proceed.
