Utah officials say the two men were arrested on suspicion of placing a burnt Cen device under a news media vehicle in Salt Lake City. The bomb didn’t disappear.
Police and fire station bomb troops responded Friday when suspicious devices were found under vehicles parked near the occupied building.
Investigators determined that “the bomb was illuminated but failed to function as designed,” according to court records cited by CBS affiliates on Sunday.
The FBI identified the two suspects and served as a search warrant at their home around Magna, west of downtown city. Two men, ages 58 and 31, have been arrested and could face charges related to possession of a weapon and the threat of terrorism, ABC affiliate reported Sunday.
During the search, a nearby home was evacuated and discovered explosives and “explosion-related components,” firearms, illegal drugs and other tools, court records say. Authorities also say they have discovered that at least two devices have been found to be hoax weapons of mass destruction.
There was no information on possible motives and the relationship between the two suspects was not immediately clear.
News media descended to Salt Lake City after being murdered at Utah Valley University in Orem, near Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk last week.
