While there have been attempts to lift the veil on game development and show people how the sausage is made, it’s still a pretty opaque space. Initiatives like Steam’s Early Access program have helped somewhat by letting players try games out for themselves and incorporate feedback, but it still feels like a disconnect. But one developer is taking it a step further with his new game. Bite Breaker Let players try it out and decide if it’s worth continuing to develop.
Byte Breakers is a 40 player battle royale game that also incorporates fighting and platforming, much like Smash Bros. and Multiversus. In short, there’s a lot going on in this title as it attempts to combine the two genres into one seamless whole. With 40 players battling to be the last team standing, the mix of platforming, screen-shaking massive attacks, and tactical elements running in the background makes it seem like total chaos, or total genius, or both.
What’s truly unique about Byte Breakers is the way it’s being made, or maybe not: developer Odyssey Interactive, the makers of multiplayer soccer title Omega Strikers, will be conducting playtests and asking for feedback on the game. On the surface it doesn’t look all that different, but how it uses that information will definitely be different.
“We’re working on a 40-player platform fighter battle royale, but we’re not sure if we’ll actually release it. We’re doing public playtests to determine if we should release it or not,” marketing director Ryan K. Rigney wrote to X. “This isn’t rhetoric, we’re serious. If you like it, we’ll work twice as hard on it. If not, we’ll release it on Icebox.”
So if the playtest goes well, Byte Breakers could come to Steam as a complete game and be released as a full game. On the other hand, if players don’t like the game they play, this could be the final release for the title.
It’s a bold move, and while the team claims the game is still just an early prototype, it’s already very polished – abandoning all that work feels like a huge step, especially since the animations are on par with those found in many finished games.
Playtesting for Bite Breakers will begin on Friday, September 13th for North American players only.If you’re interested, or if you’re outside the region and want to keep an eye on the game, head over to the Steam page for more details.
