Previously Black Ops 6 When I played the beta, I was secretly optimistic that this would be one of the best Call of Duty titles in years. Now that the beta is over, I’m more convinced than ever that BO6 will be a memorable CoD, and it looks like I’m not the only one who thinks so. Treyarch just revealed that the Black Ops 6 beta was the biggest in the history of the FPS series, which definitely bodes well for the full launch in a few weeks.
The first weekend of the beta was limited to those who pre-ordered the FPS game or had a Game Pass subscription, but the second week was free for everyone to try. The allure of a new movement system, a more compact map, and exclusive beta perks seemed to have worked to draw in a large number of players. The Black Ops 6 beta broke several records for the series.
According to a post by X from the official Call of Duty account, the Black Ops 6 beta was the “biggest beta in Call of Duty history” across four key metrics: total players, minutes played, minutes played per player, and total matches. While these actual numbers certainly mean a lot, it’s a glorious achievement that BO6 managed to smash the milestones set by previous CoD games.
It also shows that not only did the marketing and pre-beta hype bring in record numbers of individual players, but the beta gameplay was fun enough to draw people in. Especially during the second open weekend, the beta was also content-rich, with a variety of game modes, 8 of the 16 launch maps, and 30 levels to progress through. I’ve seen shooters launch fully with less content, and this definitely helped with player retention.
But the biggest thing for me as a CoD fan who returns every year is differentNot entirely, of course – Call of Duty still follows a very clear formula – but breaking from years of gameplay in the Modern Warfare subseries and introducing Omnimovement as a new skill to master definitely brought something fresh.
Of course, the beta only mentioned multiplayer, but as Black Ops 6’s launch date draws closer, we’ll be able to play what’s sure to be an incredible campaign, and it looks set to be the best Zombies mode we’ve seen in years.
