I still can’t believe the gearbox brought it Borderland 4 forward. The next entry in the Looter Shooter series is my most anticipated game of 2025, and knowing that I’ll play a few weeks earlier than I expected leaves a sweet taste in my mouth. Gearbox certainly seems confident about how the BL4 is going, and it feels particularly true from the team’s recent Pax East panel. So, if Borderlands 3 doesn’t reach the mark, don’t worry, Gearbox has heard of you.
With the release date for Borderlands 4 approaching, Gearbox knows how important co-ops are to the experience. I’ve always played the series with two characters – one with solo and friends – I’m happy to report that the entire online system has been better overhauled in Borderlands 4.
During the PAX panel, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford says the team has revamped the lobby system for Co-Op games, making it easier than ever to connect with others. You can definitely drop out and drop out. That way you and your friends don’t need to reach a specific point in the game to play together.
But even bigger is the new Fast Travel to Friends feature. Borderlands 4 has a huge, seamless world and you will probably split from your friends to do your own thing. BL4 now allows anyone in the lobby to travel quickly. This means that you can now easily back up bosses that are particularly tough.
Just like Borderlands 3, the sequel also has level scaling. This means you can jump into your friend’s lobby wherever you are in the game, and you don’t have to worry about your enemies being too tough. According to Pitchford, it has nothing to do with “the game handles that.” Loot is also an instance, so make sure that all players sift through their pool of merchandise without worrying about being stolen.
Speaking of loot, Gearbox has dramatically revamped the system’s mechanism with Borderlands 4. For starters, Loot’s complexity scaling is tuned so you won’t be overwhelmed by mechanics and ideas. This means that the amount of legends we found in BL4 will be reduced (it was too much for Borderlands 3), but now their power and abilities feel even more special.
But in the middle of the first day of the Borderlands 4 ship, you won’t accidentally leave all the booty. Every mini boss and a massive encounter will give you something special, so you can always leave feeling like the fight was well used. However, if you want to grind, you definitely can still do it. Gearbox has installed Big Encore Machine in Moxxi’s Borderlands 4. This can be used to play both missions and bosses, removing the need to reload saves if you want to cultivate one loot.
All together, Borderlands 4 sounds like the best game in the series. Gearbox’s team has heard complaints from Borderlands 3 and is overhauling the experience, not only changing the way the booty works, but also introducing quality of life. The game’s combat has also changed dramatically, so it’s a bit of itchy to finally get it.
