“Chainsaw Man” dominates the weekend box office. Springsteen biopic was disappointing

Crunchyroll and Sony’s Japanese anime “Chainsaw Man: The Movie: Lesées” took the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend with an estimated $17.25 million, according to ComScore.

Based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s popular manga series, this R-rated film follows Denji, a teenage demon hunter who is betrayed and killed by the Yakuza while trying to pay off a debt he inherited from his parents. His chainsaw-powered dog Pochita sacrifices his own life to trade and fuse with Denji, who has been reborn with the ability to turn parts of his body into a chainsaw.

Already a global hit, “Chainsaw Man” took a disappointing fourth place with an estimated $9.1 million, a blow to Disney and the 20th century biopic starring Jeremy Allen White.

The film, based on the 2023 book of the same name by Warren Zanes, depicts Springsteen’s life and career through the creative process of making his 1982 acoustic album Nebraska.

The Times described the film as a “thoughtful exploration of the creative process,” which ultimately ran out of steam and “meandered aimlessly through Springsteen’s melancholy period, never quite regaining its footing.”

In its second week of release, the horror sequel took the No. 2 slot and earned an estimated $13 million over the weekend, bringing the Universal and Blumhouse film’s domestic box office total to $49.1 million.

In third place was Paramount’s romantic drama “Regret You,” the latest film adaptation from novelist Colleen Hoover (“It Ends with Us”). Starring Allison Williams and Dave Franco, the film grossed an estimated $12.5 million domestically.
