Combine DND-style dungeons with a wide range of classes and turn-based Roguelike, crawling the Role-based combat system in the veins of Dicey Dungeons Dice and folding It brought me a lot of joy. Developer Tinymice Entertainment creates a card battle ring game that discovers its perfect sweet spot and is the ideal accompaniment to see something on the second monitor, while also bringing enough strategy to get you hooked on the numbers. Currently, the fourth free content drop brings Pirates to the table, with three new heroes entering the fight and additional seas.
As a quick introduction to dice and folding for those who haven’t checked out yet, the general flow involves moving between battle encounters and turning the dice to take action by assigning them to your enemies and your own characters. If you’re playing other dice-based Roguelikes, such as Dicey Dungeons, you already have a rough idea of what to expect, but if you’re new, you’re very intuitive from the start, so you can quickly pick up things and get a grasp of your strategy from there.
The new dice and fold pirate update brings a very literal ocean-themed extra to ramp the run. This starts with three new playable heroes, each with their own unique abilities. The captain collects money and completes a random slot on the board. Pirate Queen commands higher dice rolls and allows you to increase the number of enemy slots each time you activate a special effect. Tidebringer is the water-bending master who can bring her companions and shake the tide of battle with her favor.
There are 15 additional items to discover. You will encounter all sorts of voyage treasures, including anchors that reduce enemy attack values, treasure maps that reward you to complete dice slots in the gold set, boiled crabs that give you red dice at the start of each battle. Scallywag’s sheath has the opportunity to convert one roll to 6, but WaveSplitter Ax can grant a lucky hit that completes two enemy slots rather than one.
If you’re confident, there are five new “cursed” trinkets that will make running harder. You will find you cannot take double damage, fight only against elite enemies, or acquire allies. Tinymice explains that these should only be used by heroes who don’t believe in nonsense like curses.
Of course, if there are no water-themed enemies, it’s not special for sailors. Find everything from undead pirates and giant clams to evil anglers and increasingly deadly to deeper fears. If you’re lucky (or perhaps bad luck), you may even encounter huge, writhing tentacles – you can stop them all, and you will face the Kraken to which they belong.
