When you think about boomer shooters, you tend to think of gritty, Grimdark problems. The same applies to most games featuring guns as primary mechanics. but, Don’t stop Girlypop Challenging these preconceived notions, it offers a vision of what an earthquake would look like if TIT was designed by a teenage girl in the 90s. This high octane fever dream, which is equality with pink and punishment, is one of the best ideas of indie games I’ve seen in a long time, and I’m trying to play it. Luckily, Demo has just been released on Steam, so you can see if the gameplay can withstand the aesthetics.
Don’t stop Girlypop from looking like a Doom played in Barbie’s Dreamhouse. Doom Slayer finds a rhinestone breast trapped somewhere in the depths of hell and decides to make it his whole personality. However, there is more to this game than the tutorial I think should end up saying “Good luck, don’t fuck.”
There are battles against capitalism, dying planets to save, and some serious enemies to kill. Is it important whether you are killing demons with a pistol firing skull or a bubble gun shooting pink heart? I didn’t think so. If the battle feels good and the story holds under light scrutiny, the shooter will shoot.
My demo is downloading this while writing. I want a classic boomer shooter game with the biggest 90s aesthetics and songs that hit hard like Goodbye Wild Hearts. This was necessary as the girl was written quickly to grab as much cash as possible before the bubbles exploded in a week that was disappointing by the most mid-Taylor Swift album ever.
Girlypop is more than just aesthetic, however. The faster you move, the more damage you deal, the more you twist the classic formula. You shouldn’t stand still in any game of this nature, but this just heats up the action and makes it appear on the pitch. Dashes, double jumps, slams and bunny hops are all in the main character’s arsenal (not to mention these bejazzedlifle rifles), and movement is at the heart of everything Girlypop does.
