LONDON (AP) — The driver was arrested Monday after plowing a crowd of Liverpool soccer fans celebrating the city soccer team’s Premier League Championship, police said.
Merseyside police said they are investigating reports of multiple pedestrians being attacked.
The social media video appears to show the grey minivan strike of at least one pedestrian, then towards more people, they walk through the group to open the path, pushing their bodies along the path like cultivation before stopping.
Harry Rashid, who was in the parade with his wife and two young daughters, said the car began thrust people around 10 feet (3 meters) away from him.
“It was very fast,” Rashid said. “In the beginning, I just heard pop, pop, pop, pop from people being knocked out of the hood of a car.”
Prime Minister Kiel Starmer said he was updated with the situation and thanked the police for his prompt response.
“The Liverpool scene is horrifying. My idea is with everyone who is injured or affected,” Starge said.
The incident follows a massive celebration in the city centre, with tens of thousands of dances, scarves and flag-waving fans lined up the streets to encourage the rainy weather, watching Liverpool players display Premier League trophies on two buses with the words “Our Again.”
Rashid said the car stopped after crashing with the first victim, and the crowd began charging the vehicle and destroying the windows.
“But then he put his feet down again and plowed the rest, and he just kept going,” Rashid said. “It was horrifying, and you could hear the bumps as he was watching people.”
Rashid said it looked intentional and he was shocked and distrustful.
“My daughter started screaming, and there was someone on the ground,” he said. “They are just innocent people, they just have fans enjoying the parade.”
