Whether it’s a masterpiece of software dark fantasy like Eldenling, something with more novel settings and flavours like P’s Lies, or a game that leaves a traditional melee focus like Remnant 2, it’s absolutely pampered when it comes to great soul slicks these days. However, it is rare to adopt core combat principles like Souls and chuck it into a vampire survivor style holder slayer. Well, that’s exactly that Ember and BladeThe newly revealed action RPG aims to achieve that.
Like many of the best Souls-like games, Ember and Blade are dark fantasy events. You play as a demon hunter called Fenrix. Fenrix is given immortality by cutting a rather sweet deal with the angel. However, there are a few catches. The first is that his immortality is temporary. Second, he must venture into a mysterious realm where a powerful arch demon known as Asmodeus is being made prisoners. However, after hundreds of years of lockdown, Asmodeus threatens to be free and resurrected. It’s your job to help the “mysterious guardian magician” known as Ariella.
However, there are fest-stretched demonic monsters in this world, and they are not going to make life easier for you. When I say I’m infected, I mean that. With dozens of units on screen at a time, the slow, accurate, systematic combat of most soul slicks will be in the rear seat as you explore this world. Instead, Ember and Blade can crank things up to chaos at the vampire survivor level and pass through the horde. It can also run powerful areas of effective abilities. As you progress, you will receive blessings from angels who can synergize to create any kind of character build.
However, when you come across the main boss of the game, things return to a more traditional soul-like feel. There is a red health bar of the right size. A sequence of attacks will cast your way. Dodging and hitting at the right moment becomes a much more important strategy suddenly than blowing up dozens of enemies at once.
It seems to me like a winning combination, and when you marry it with the amazing art style of Ember and Blade, it looks like something to see.
Ember and Blade is scheduled to be released in 2026, but developer linegames says the demo should steam in the second half of 2025. If you want to add a wish list, you can do so here.
