The sound of swords clashing, the whisper of the wind in a crowded market, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 This is a work that perfectly depicts life in the Middle Ages. This is not only one of the best RPGs of the year, but also an essential role-playing experience for fans of the genre, offering a harsh world that is both beautiful and dangerous. I can’t recommend it highly enough. As someone who loves games like Chivalry, I was immediately drawn to the combat in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Playing as Henry of Skalitz, you are not a one-man army (though you can certainly learn how to be one), but a soldier who can be hurt and weakened just like anyone else. That makes common battles more engaging and makes encounters with random bandits feel like a big risk, especially when you’re low on food, sleep, and health.
The combat remains engaging throughout, but the overarching political story, Henry’s personal goals and need for revenge keep you playing with anticipation to see how everything will play out. Even if you choose to fast travel, the journey between quests feels just as spectacular, as random events occur to maintain immersion. Personally, I stick to jumping on a horse and galloping through the countryside, as the scenery is much better.
In his 9/10 review of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Lowell Bell called it “a must-play medieval RPG, despite the agonizing and rough edges of late-game progression,” and the Royal Edition offers even more fun. Including three expansions and several cosmetic/item kits to equip Henry, the base game is already a sprawling adventure of over 50 hours, but the addition of these new stories to experience makes it even richer.
