President of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Developer Dragami Games has responded to the remaster’s launch, with players reporting graphical and gameplay bugs, regional pricing issues, and changes to the core gameplay experience. This, plus the removal of nearly all licensed music from the original game, has left many Lollipop Chainsaw players hoping for more. In response, Dragami president Yoshimi Yasuda denounced the apparent “fake news” surrounding the release, while promising that fixes are on the way soon.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is finally here. The remaster of the cult favorite zombie game has been long awaited by die-hard fans, but it seems to be far from what many expected. Many feel something is missing, with glitches, different gameplay, and fewer options on PC. Yasuda is aware of this and explains what Dragami has planned for the game going forward.
First, Yasuda addressed the price difference between each region. Currently, the remaster version does not have a regional pricing structure, making it even harder for some potential buyers to justify purchasing the game. Yasuda’s comments have been machine translated and edited for clarity. “I agree with the points raised by game users,” Yasuda explained, “and we will adjust the price promptly.”
Yasuda mentioned the current state of gameplay for Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, which has received many bug reports. Players have reported issues with audio cutting out, muffled audio, frequent stuttering and frame rate drops, and even crashes. “In addition to fixing bugs, we will also consider and optimize configuration options,” Yasuda assured.
Many players have also reported that the main character, Juliet, feels slower to control than in the 2012 original, making her sometimes difficult to control in the remaster. Prior to release, Yasuda said that RePOP changes gameplay mechanics such as “attack power, movement speed, camera movement range, combo input acceptance time, and first combo skill.” This is likely a result of the remaster’s upgrade from Unreal Engine 3 to 5, Yasuda explained, and noted how Dragami is investigating the issue.
“Regarding the physics engine, the physics engine used in the original version was not compatible with UE5, so we introduced Kawaii Physics in RePOP,” Yasuda explained. “The behavior of the physics engine was due to a parameter setting mistake, and we plan to fix it as soon as possible.”
Kawaii Physics is an Unreal Engine plugin that some developers use to add physics to rigged clothing in addition to certain character physics. Dragami Games appears to have used the plugin to make the gameplay work with Unreal Engine 5, but this has caused some issues for players. There are also still no graphics options on PC, and players claim that much of the licensed music from the original has also been replaced.
Finally, Yasuda addressed so-called “fake news” from media reports: “It is unfortunate that some influencers and journalists are spreading fake news that I proposed RePOP mode as a censored mode and negotiated to make the original mode uncensored,” Yasuda said.
“In fact, the game you’re playing today has been approved by the ESRB, applied to all platforms, and approved for release on all platforms without any modification instructions.”
Currently, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has two modes: the original mode remains the game released in 2012 (with UE5 engine changes), but the RePOP mode replaces the gory scenes with a pop art style. Like the original game, RePOP is rated Mature by the ESRB for bloody and gory scenes, drug references, and intense violence.
