On Friday, September 13, her team announced her death on Instagram. “It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of star ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince. Her artistry touched countless hearts, her spirit inspired many and she left an indelible mark on the ballet world and beyond.”
The statement continued: “Her life was defined by grace, purpose and strength. Her unwavering dedication to the arts, her humanitarian work and her courage in overcoming unimaginable odds will forever inspire us. She was a beacon of hope to so many, showing us that beauty and greatness can come from the darkest places, no matter the obstacles.”

Mikaela became a ballerina after moving to the United States. Her parents died during the civil war in Sierra Leone, and she was placed in an orphanage where she was abused due to her vitiligo. Then she saw a magazine cover featuring a ballerina and dreamed of becoming a ballerina. In 1999, she was adopted by Elaine and Charles DePrince, and moved with her adoptive parents to New Jersey. At the age of five, she enrolled in the Rock School for Dance Education (RSDE) in Philadelphia.
