One of the best RPGs I’ve ever played (and to be honest, I played too much), Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord is not only about battles, but also about medieval life. Sure, real-time battles are a chaotic mix of intensity and fun, but you’ll also have to engage in politics, trade, and be diplomatic. It’s not all about cutting the throat of your mortal enemy.
You create your character first, and everything else slowly falls into place from there. When you’re training, using a sword seems easy, but in reality, opposing knights aren’t as simple as training dummies, forcing you to weave and block as often as you slash. You can gallop into the heat of battle on your trusty steed, or stay on the outskirts and take on pesky soldiers too shy to join in.
In between fights to the death, you might get married or yell at peasants who refuse to join the army. It’s a great mix of strategy and action, but the whole experience really feels like an adventure just your character is on. The closest game I can compare it to is Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, but Mount and Blade 2 benefits from a focus on role-playing experiences, allowing you to embed your characters in a larger world. This feels very different from the more cinematic approach of Kingdom Come.
