Chicago (WGN) – Questions have emerged as Pope almost immediately after the election of Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prebust. Is the Pope a Cubs fan or the White Sox?
Speaking to WGN of Nexstar on Thursday, Prevost’s brother John answered a fiery question: As Prevost is now known, Pope Leo XIV is a fan of Southsided’s nickname, the White Sox nickname that plays on Chicago’s Southside rating field.
However, the family split. Mom was a Cubs fan and his dad was a St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Father Gregory Sakovic, president of the Holy Named Cathedral, told The Associated Press that the sun came out in Chicago when the new Pope was announced, a coincidence that he described as “remaining anonymous of God.”
He said he was “pleasantly shocked,” and also thought that the new Pope might support the Cubs and Sox. Sakovic laughed when the journalist said he had heard he was there for the Cubs. “God blesses him,” he said.
To Sakowicz’s potential disappointment, John Prevost confirmed that his brother is a lifelong White Sox fan.
“He was never a Cubs fan, so I don’t know where it came from,” Prevost said.
