Greene’s next project from Brendan’ Playerunknown is, of course, an ambitious project after essentially inventing the Battle Royale genre at PUBG. In fact, it is so ambitious that he needs to release three small games in the buildup. The first one is prologueA survival game that challenges you to survive in a randomly generated, yet realistic world. Setting up an early access release in the coming months will allow you to jump the queue and take part in the latest Progue PlayTest, which has come live on Steam.
At first glance, the prologue sounds like a rather simple and basic survival game. You are the only creature in that vast map, you have hunger and warmth parameters to manage, and the only real purpose is to make your way to the flashing light above the tower of the weather station. But it’s actually one of the toughest, punishing, immersive survival experiences I’ve played. Certainly, you cannot build elaborate bases for yourself, tame dinosaurs, or protect yourself from cannibalism. But the vast scale of loneliness, atmosphere and the randomly generated maps of prologue make them a compelling time. At least that was my experience when I was able to try out the prologue at Playerunknown Productions earlier this year.
In almost every respect it is a peeled back and unsupported experience. Collect some useful tools, some supplies, maps and compasses, and appear in the starting shack that will help you navigate the terrain and find a cabin to evacuate and loot. These cabins and occasional small sheds are the only structures visible from the weather station waiting for you on the other side of the 8 x 8 km map.
Not only will you make sure you are well fed and watered, but the biggest thing that will catch you is dynamic weather. A storm can turn a patch of certain ground into a quagmire. This will reduce walking speed or a snowstorm will reduce visibility and reduce temperature. If you are not inside, you are in warm clothes enough, or next to the fire, it will cause a quick, icy end.
If Prologue sounds like an interesting project to you, you’ll probably want to join that latest PlayTest. Playerunknown Productions has been running them every month since February. Currently, April 1st is here, and we’re posting the pace again before the prologue release date.
The new Progue PlayTest will be live on Steam until Monday, April 14th. Sign-ups are open and keys will be distributed on a first come first served basis. You can sign up here on the game’s Discord server.
