Considering Runescape, perhaps a few things, quaint, pixel graphics, wise old man, many woodblock prints, some very large rats. But you also think about the community. A game built by developers that respond directly to players. The passion that Jagex has in his game, who was attending RuneFest a few months ago, is very much reflected in his player base. In many ways, MMORPG feels like a mutual exchange of ideas. Runescape DragonWilds“Creative Director Rich” Modluke ‘Turek says the team wants to promote the same sense of community and freedom with a new survival spinoff, and knows that the introduction of mods is the key to doing so.
MODs are, after all, the ultimate expression of player freedom and the ultimate expression of developer trust. In many ways, you are passing your shiny new Porsche keys to a hilarious, misfit band that could potentially wreaking havoc. But when I spoke to Jagex about the Old School Runescape project Zanaris, the idea of ”smashing the game” is also inspiring. MMORPG is a labor of love, not a gatekept.
Turek hopes that the developer’s new spinoff survival game Runescape DragonWilds has a similar sense of comfort and mixed chaos, and knows that mods and private servers will become one of the community’s most risky features. Good News, People: Turek is making sure the mods are “undetectedly on the table” in the future.
When asked if DragonWilds remains a mysterious boxed product experience like the other Triple A titles, Turek shook his head. “No, I want to bring the community as much as possible,” he says. “The first step in that journey is to allow players to host their own servers. These servers have several settings that you can customize.
“The mods are definitely on the table. That’s always on our discussion. But we’re trying to refine the core loop of the game at the moment, and we’re making sure we have a fair amount of content for players to enjoy. That’s very core of what we want to do, and that’s how Jagex works equally in terms of engaging player agencies and communities.”
Mod support and private servers aren’t on the Runescape DragonWilds roadmap yet, but there’s plenty to be excited about. Hardcore mode (Turek is inspired by the same thing in the base MMO, with “a unique twist with its runescape lens,” and the future of magic and long distance trees, and of course, more adorable creatures, Ashenfall looks brighter.
