Finding new roguelikes is the best part of the job. The genre is full of promising ideas, tough fights, and complex challenges. On Steam alone, there are plenty of opportunities to find the next Hades or Balatro. The one we’re talking about today might be one of them. Created by a former Rockstar developer and inspired by Risk of Rain 2 and Vampire Survivors, TerralithiaWith Steam Early Access just around the corner and a demo available to try right now, we truly can’t wait to see what happens next in this roguelike.
Tiny Game Dev is a studio with quite a history. Founded by Flavius Alecu, they moved into the indie scene after developing titles like Brink, GTA 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Alecu’s first game since then was Terralysia, which they say is “heavily influenced by Risk of Rain 2 and Vampire Survivors.” It’s easy to see why; this third-person roguelike is full of tense combat, bullet hell, and speed.
Just like Risk of Rain 2 and Vampire Survivors, character choice matters. You can enter combat as a spell-casting mage, an arrow-shooting archer or a sword-swinging melee combatant. It’s up to you whether you prefer traditional close-quarters combat or something a little more ranged. You can also earn experience points, unlock skills and try out different build combinations.
You need to keep moving, find damaging spells quickly, and collect all the shards you can, or you’ll be overwhelmed by enemies that keep appearing. This is the basic principle of games like Vampire Survivors, Enter the Gungeon, and Returnal, so if you’ve played those roguelikes, you know what to expect. Alecu knows Terralysia is hard, but that’s what I’m most excited about. The learning curve of the best roguelikes always starts off tough, but there’s nothing better than mastering the enemies and mechanics.
Alecu plans to add two playable characters, two maps, and 19 spells/items to play with to the Early Access build of Terralysia, and the full Steam roadmap includes even more content, including three more characters, six maps, over 100 spells and items, plus permanent upgrades.
If you’re looking for something new to try after the failure of Seekers of the Storm while Gearbox fixes it with Risk of Rain 2, you can’t go wrong with Terralysia. It may have swapped sci-fi for fantasy, but it still recreates the fast-paced, deadly combat that RoR2 is known for.
Tiny Game Dev will release Terralysia on Steam Early Access on Thursday, November 7th, with a demo of the game available now.Click here for more details.
