(Hill) – Former central banker Mark Carney won the Liberal election on Sunday’s landslide, replacing Justin Trudeau as Canadian prime minister. He will take office in the next few days.
Carney will take over as a political outsider. Kearney’s victory was praised primarily for his strong financial qualifications, as he never held the Politburo. This is considered a key asset for Canada as the country found itself in a trade war with President Donald Trump’s administration.
Kearney is a two-time central banker. He ran the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013, praised him for helping him recover from the 2008 financial crisis faster than many other countries.
He was then hired to run the Bank of England, which ran from 2013 to 2020, becoming the first non-British person in his 300-year history. In 2020 he became the United Nations Climate Action and Finance Envoy.
Carney graduated from Harvard University in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and received a master’s and doctoral degree in economics from Oxford University. He played ice hockey in college.
Carney began his career in banking. He is a former Goldman Sachs executive and has 13 years of experience in New York, Toronto, London and Tokyo. In 2003 he was appointed lieutenant governor of the Bank of Canada.
Kearney’s time as prime minister may be short-lived. He will face a federal election this year, facing Canadian Conservative Party Pierre Polyavel. Until recently, the liberals were catching up in polls. Polleville was 47-20% ahead in the mid-January polls. However, the latest polls show that conservatives are just three points ahead of liberals, 37-34%.
