Gunshots were reported near former President Donald Trump’s Florida home on Sunday afternoon, but the president was uninjured, his campaign and the Secret Service said.
It was not immediately clear whether the reported shooting was aimed at the Republican presidential candidate.
The U.S. Secret Service is investigating and said the incident happened just before 2 p.m. “The former president is safe,” the Secret Service said.
About two months ago, Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, with a bullet grazed his ear.
Trump returned to Florida this weekend from a West Coast tour that included a Friday night rally in Las Vegas and a fundraiser in Utah.
The campaign did not immediately release additional details.
A law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, said authorities were trying to determine whether the shooting took place near or on the grounds of Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course. The official was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Trump often spends the morning playing golf before having lunch at Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach, one of three golf courses he owns in the state.
Trump has beefed up security since the July assassination attempt, parking dump trucks along the outside wall of Trump Tower when he was there in New York, and speaking at outdoor rallies from behind a bulletproof glass enclosure.
There was no immediate response to messages sent to campaign officials seeking information about the security and whereabouts of Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio.
This is breaking news and will be updated.
