I wanted to get into a hostile environment and be aggressive to learn that it was playing in front of a 4,347 sold out crowd at Goth Stadium.
The Trojans tried to set the tone early.
Instead, it backfired, sacrificing early opportunities, early momentum and ultimately a Sunday night match in Oregon in the Corvallis Regional Final.
It opened with two hard hits. He singled and continued with a rocket from the field in the middle right that came out of the bat at 104 mph. I hop one wall and hop a simple double that could have been set up with two runners with a scoring position and no out. However, USC’s 3 base coach Travis Jewett quickly put his arm around and sent Dowd home.
Short stop Iva Arquette, the top 10 pick expected in next month’s MLB draft, fired a slow home that took catcher Wilson Weber to the baseline, where he applied the tag to Dowd while his knee collided with the Trojan-looking head. Dowd, who had been begging him right after the play, then left the game.
“It didn’t work for us, but we were on the board right away and trying to get offensive,” said USC head coach Andy Stankivich. “Hidden wisdom is always 20/20, right? You can’t play “what if?” The game didn’t work. ”
The play cheered the home crowd and set the tone of a beatdown that thoroughly overtook the Trojans, despite the 8th National Seed Beaver eliminating the second game of the day. Oregon State reached the finals by Panmering St. Mary’s 20-3 on Sunday afternoon.
In the next half-inning, Oregon attacked USC with four bunts, generating four runs. The Trojan aggression bit them again.
After first going out on the first sacrifice attempt, the Trojans tried to cut down runners at home with unfortunate outcomes. A third base hand hedge muffed a naive attempt when the ball bounced off with a single hard bunt when it bounced off with a funky spin on a hard bunt. The Beaver was banded again on the next pitch. Adrian Lopez, a baseman, tried to get home, but it was too late.
“We were trying to slow the momentum a little,” Stankiewicz said. “It’s sort of a catch 22. You’re offensive, you get bigger there and minimize innings. If you’re not offensive, you’re out, but more people get (score) (in my mind, we didn’t pitch well.
Before Oregon returned to the bunt and scored his fourth run, a base hit scored the next run, prompting the crowd to start chanting “Small ball! Small ball! Small ball!”
Oregon added two runs in three innings to take a 6-1 lead, earning a rare offensive lull on the day they scored 34 runs with 38 hits. The Beavers went into two innings without scoring, leading to USC having a big opportunity to return to the game. The Trojans loaded the bass without outs in five innings to set the heart of the lineup.
However, the Beaver pitching staff had USC 3-4-5 batters in the blender all night. Starter Wyatt Queen handed over the ball to reliever Kellan Oaks after throwing Bryce Martin Glazieranek for the third time. He beat Lopez and Abri Covalbias to escape the unharmed jam. USC finished the night with 16 strikeouts and finished as a team with nine different batters returning to the dugout for a short walk.
Oregon then ran against unused weapons in the USC bullpen, scoring his sixth run on Trent Caraway’s fourth home run, bringing his sixth three runs in many games at Corvallis Regional. Bieber added two runs in seven and eight innings, adding one final tally to nine.
Caraway reached base five times on two walks and three of Oregon’s 17 hits. He finished with three runs and four RBIs. Tyce Peterson was four perfect fours with doubles and two RBIs. Jack Baser led the USC offense with three hits, including triples and Trojan loneliness.
USC will have an opportunity to redeem on Monday. The Oregon victory will force all regional game 7 for winners with a 3pm PDT (ESPNU).
“We just flat out tonight,” Stankiewicz said. “We’ve just been reorganized, let go, wash it off, ready. After some tough losses, we responded really well all year round.
Victor will face Florida State next weekend on Monday after the Seminoles win the Tallahassee region. USC travels to Florida. Oregon hosts the Colvalis Super Regional.
