(The Hill) – Vice President JD Vance looked back on his meeting with Pope Francis on Wednesday.
“I thought a lot about it. In fact, it’s pretty crazy,” Vance told Indian reporters when asked about being one of the last officials to meet the Pope.
“Obviously, when I saw him I didn’t know that he was still on this planet for less than 24 hours,” Vance added. “I think it was a huge blessing. But he saw a lot of people. I think he had an impact on a lot of life, and I remember being lucky enough to be able to wave his hand.”
Vance met Francis briefly on Sunday during his trip to Rome and the Vatican. The Pope, who had recovered from pneumonia, passed away early Monday morning at the age of 88. Presidents Trump and President Melania Trump are scheduled to attend the Pope’s funeral on Saturday.
While in Rome, Vance also met Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, Vatican. The Vice President converted to Catholicism in 2019.
