The only passenger to survive the Air India crash that boarded Thursday, 241 people were thrown off the plane and killed 241 people on board said, after walking to a nearby ambulance for assistance.
Doctors at the Civic Hospital in Ahmedabad identified the man as Vishwashkumar Ramesh and said that India’s Home Minister Amit Shah had met the survivors. The airline said he is of British Indian origin.
“He was confused by multiple injuries throughout his body,” Dr. Dabal Gameti, who treated Ramesh, told the Associated Press. “But it seems he’s out of danger.”
According to another Medic, Ramesh told him that he began to descend shortly after the plane took off, suddenly split into two, and abandoned him before it exploded loudly.
The video broadcast by the Indian news channel appeared to show bloody Ramesh walking away from the crash site and the people running behind him.
Ramesh, who had his boarding pass with him at the hospital, told the local newspaper, Hindustan Times that he saw the plane’s bodies and crashing.
“When I woke up I had a body around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran,” he told the newspaper.
Ramesh traveled to London with his brothers and called Leicester relatives after the crash, his cousin Ajay Bargi told the BBC.
“He just said he was fine and he didn’t say anything else,” Bargi said.
Nayan Kumar Ramesh told Sky News that his brothers called the father’s moment after crash.
“He crashed my dad and said, ‘The plane crashed. I don’t know where my brother is. I can’t see any other passengers. I don’t know how I live or if I left the plane.”
