steam With over 40 million people using Valve’s storefront at once, it officially hit the peak of the most active user of all time. The Counter-Strike and Team Fortress homes have been the best place to buy, download and play games on your PC for a long time. This new milestone proves that once again. With the recent launch of Monster Hunter Wiles, it has allowed them to climb well over a million simultaneous players, so it’s clear that Valve’s platform won’t go anywhere anytime soon.
As of Sunday, March 2, 2025, Steam has exceeded the threshold for over 40 million active users. The concurrent numbers have been steadily rising for years, showing signs of zero slowing down throughout 2025. The amount of players in the game is actually much lower, but it still exceeds an incredibly respectable 12 million. It’s not surprising as it’s one of the easiest platforms to play the best PC games.
At the time of writing, Steam has peaked with a staggering 40,270,997 active users (via SteamDB), and I am sure that the number will continue to rise. Looking at the data provided by SteamDB, it shows how far Valve’s store has come. At the beginning of 2005, active users sat in the 200,000 range. The platform has grown exponentially from around 2 million in 2010 to over 20.2 million. In other words, the number of simultaneous Steam users has increased by around 20 million over the past five years.
Valve’s own counterstrike 2 has reached a peak of 1.8 million users, so it remains a consistent winner on the platform, with other games like PUBG, Dota 2 and Naraka: BladePoint continuing to hit hundreds of thousands of people every day. New releases like Monster Hunter Wilds helped Valve reach milestones too. Capcom’s new game became one of the platform’s biggest platforms with over 1.3 million active players over the weekend.
In fact, Steam is so big that our own findings last year calculated that among all of us, we spent $1.9 billion/£1.4 billion on games we’ve never played. It’s awful lot just sitting at the bottom of your library and begs you to start up once. Even Amazon recognizes what Power Steam is exerting on consumers, and admits that one previous VP is 250 times larger, but its attempt to rival valves that rival the platform.
